Australia’s Emissions Projections 2012

The Australian Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency releases official projections of its greenhouse gas emissions annually. The previous projections were released in early 2011 (referred to as the 2010 projections). Since the release of the 2010 projections, the Department of the Treasury released modelling in mid-2011, entitled Strong Growth Low Pollution (SGLP), which includes projections of Australia’s emissions to 2050.3

The 2012 projections provide a full update of Australia’s emissions projections including:

  • an estimate of average emissions for the Kyoto Protocol first commitment period (2008–12);
  • a projection to 2020, which provides the basis for estimating the ‘abatement challenge’ Australia faces in meeting its 2020 targets;
  • and an indicative projection of Australia’s emissions to 2030.

The projections are developed and presented at a sectoral level, encompassing domestic emissions from stationary energy (including electricity generation and direct combustion), transport, fugitive emissions from fuel production, industrial processes, agriculture, waste and deforestation and reforestation.

An Economic Analysis of GRDC Investment in the Managing Climate Variability Program

This economic evaluation refers to the investment in the Managing Climate Variability Program (MCVP) Phases II and III. The aim of the program is to help primary industries and natural resource managers manage the risks and exploit the opportunities afforded by Australita’s variable and changing climate by:

  • improving forecasting accuracy, lead-time and ease of use,
  • providing tools and services for managing climate risk, and
  •  increasing adoption of climate risk management.

MDF Carbon Emissions Reduction Plan-Dairy

In May 2009 the Macalister Demonstration Farm (MDF) made a successful application to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry under the Farm Ready Program for a project known as the ‘Carbon Ready Dairy Demonstration’ to identify the source and size of carbon emissions generated by normal operations and then to use this information to develop a Carbon Emissions Reduction Plan. The Plan includes strategies to minimise and offset carbon emissions as well as an analysis of the financial impact of the plan on the farm business. A key to the project is to gather and interpret information in a practical way so that farmers can then make informed decisions about their investment in carbon emissions reduction or offset.
